Where are car trackers hidden?

June 7, 2026

It is a fair question. If a tracker is meant to protect your car, where does it actually go, and can a thief just find it and rip it out? Here is an honest answer without handing anyone a map.

The short version

A professionally installed tracker is concealed out of sight and hardwired into the vehicle, so there is no external clue that it is even there. That is the whole idea. A thief walking up to your car should see nothing that tells them it is protected. We are not going to publish the exact spots, for obvious reasons, but the principle is simple: out of sight, wired in, no obvious plug to pull.

Why a hidden unit beats a visible one

This is where the honest contrast matters. A self-fit OBD dongle plugs into the OBD port, which sits in a known, easy-to-reach place under the dash. It is easy to spot and easy to unplug in seconds. That is the trade-off you accept for a device you can fit yourself.

A hardwired ScorpionTrack unit is different. It is tucked away by a trained installer and wired into the vehicle’s electrical system, so there is no dangling device and no quick way to remove it. Concealment helps, but it is not the real protection

Here is the part people miss. Hiding the unit is useful, but it is not what actually saves your car. The monitoring is.

Every ScorpionTrack tier is monitored 24/7 from our Secure Operating Center. If your vehicle moves without authorization, we contact you. You do not have to notice something is wrong and call us. That response is the protection, and it does not depend on a thief failing to find the unit.

What happens even if a unit were found

Say the worst happens and someone does locate the hardware. You are still covered, and this is by design.

On Secure and Elite, Automatic Driver Recognition uses driver tags to tell you apart from a thief. If the car moves without a recognized tag present, which is exactly what happens in keyless and relay theft, the system triggers an alert. Tampering and unauthorized movement get noticed. And on Elite, remote immobilization means the vehicle can be stopped after a confirmed theft, so it does not get far. You can read more in automatic driver recognition explained.

So the answer to “what if they find it” is not “then you lose the car.” It is “then the alert has already gone out and the response is already underway.”

The right tool for the vehicle

Where the unit goes also depends on the vehicle. For cars with permanent power, a hardwired Standard, Secure, or Elite install is concealed and wired in. For vehicles without permanent power, trailers, or classics kept off the grid, Scorpion Go is battery-powered and still tucked out of sight. Every tier is insurance approved, and you can compare them on the products page.

The takeaway

A good hiding spot buys you time. But the thing that actually protects your car is a monitored system that reacts the moment the vehicle moves. We contact you, you do not have to notify us, and prevention beats recovery every time. Concealment is the start of the story, not the end of it.

Our team will help you choose the right level of protection and arrange professional fitting.
