Car tracker prices are all over the map, and that confuses people. You can find something for the price of a tank of gas, and you can find systems that cost a lot more. Both are called “trackers.” They are not the same product. Here is how to think about cost so you actually know what you are paying for.
The two parts of the price
Every real tracker has two costs: the hardware and the ongoing service. Ignore either one and the numbers stop making sense.
The hardware is the device and, for professional systems, the fitting. The service is the subscription that keeps the tracker connected to the cellular network and, in the case of a monitored system, keeps a team watching it for you. We will not print specific dollar figures here, because prices change and depend on your vehicle and tier. What matters more is understanding what each price band actually buys.
The cheap end: plug-in and app-only trackers
At the low end are plug-in OBD trackers and battery devices you monitor yourself through an app. They are cheap up front and easy to fit. The trade-off is that they are easy for a thief to find and unplug, and nobody is watching them but you. If your phone is on silent at 3am, the alert goes unseen.
We cover the limits of these honestly in hardwired vs battery vs OBD trackers and in why a cheap car tracker is a false economy. The cheapest option is rarely the best value once you factor in what you are trusting it to do.
The serious end: professionally fitted, monitored systems
At the other end are hardwired systems that are professionally installed and monitored around the clock. This is where ScorpionTrack sits. The device is hidden and wired into the vehicle, so it is far harder to find and disable, and a real team is watching it.
That is the key difference: if your vehicle moves without authorization, we contact you from our Secure Operating Center. You do not have to spot it, open an app, or call anyone first. We reach out to you. That service is a large part of what you pay for, and it is why these systems cost more than a plug-in.
Why there is a subscription
A tracker without a live connection is just a box. The subscription pays for the cellular link that lets the device report its position, and for monitored systems it pays for the 24/7 team behind it. That is an ongoing cost because it is an ongoing service. We explain this in full in why trackers have a subscription, and we tackle the marketing myth head-on in the truth about no monthly fee GPS trackers.
Matching cost to your vehicle
The right spend depends on the car and the threat. ScorpionTrack offers four insurance approved tiers so you are not paying for more than you need, or settling for less:
- Scorpion Go is a battery unit with no permanent power connection, a simpler monitored option.
- Scorpion Standard is hardwired, monitored recovery.
- Scorpion Secure adds two Automatic Driver Recognition tags to defend against keyless and relay theft.
- Scorpion Elite adds remote immobilization, so a stolen car can be stopped, not just followed. Prevention beats recovery.

The honest way to judge cost
Do not ask “what is the cheapest tracker.” Ask “what does this cost me over a few years, and what does it actually do when my car is targeted.” A cheap device that nobody watches can end up costing you the whole car. A monitored, insurance approved system, British engineered and protecting vehicles since 1973, is priced for the job it is built to do.
Tell us your vehicle and how you use it, and we will point you to the tier that makes sense.
