Hardwired vs battery vs OBD trackers

July 17, 2026

Not all trackers connect to your vehicle the same way, and the connection method matters more than most people realize. It affects how well the tracker hides, how hard it is to defeat, and what kind of vehicle it suits. Here is the honest breakdown of the three types.

Hardwired trackers

A hardwired tracker is wired directly into your vehicle’s electrical system and tucked away out of sight. It draws power from the car, so it never needs charging, and because it is hidden inside the vehicle, a thief cannot easily find it, reach it, or rip it out.

This is the gold standard for a daily-driven car. It is permanent, it is discreet, and it keeps working in the background without you ever thinking about it. Professional installation is part of the deal, which is a feature, not a downside: a properly hidden install is exactly what makes it hard to defeat.

Our Standard, Secure, and Elite units are all hardwired. If you drive the vehicle regularly and want the strongest, most tamper-resistant setup, this is the one.

Battery-powered trackers

A battery tracker has its own power source and does not tie into the vehicle’s wiring. That makes it the right tool for anything that does not have permanent power to draw from, or where you do not want a wired install.

Think trailers, motorcycles, classic cars that sit for weeks, plant and equipment, or a vehicle you want to protect without touching its electrics. Our Scorpion Go is the battery-powered option, built for exactly these cases, and it is why a motorcycle GPS tracker usually goes battery rather than hardwired.

The honest tradeoff is power management. A battery unit needs charging or battery attention from time to time, unlike a hardwired unit that just runs. For the vehicles it is designed for, that is a fair trade, and often the only practical option.

OBD trackers

An OBD tracker plugs into the diagnostic port that most cars have under the dash. The appeal is obvious: it is plug-and-play, no installation, no wiring.

Here is where we are going to be straight with you. That same convenience is the weakness. The OBD port is a known, standard location. A thief who knows what they are doing knows exactly where to look, and an OBD tracker can be found and unplugged in seconds. Once it is unplugged, it is doing nothing.

For a device whose entire job is to survive a theft, being easy to find and remove is a serious flaw. Convenience is nice; a tracker that a thief can yank in five seconds is not. That is why our theft-focused units are hidden and hardwired, not plugged into a port in plain sight.

So which should you pick

If it is a car you drive regularly and you want the best protection, go hardwired: Standard, Secure, or Elite depending on how much you want, from monitored tracking up to driver recognition and remote immobilization.

If it is a trailer, bike, classic, or anything without permanent power, go battery with Scorpion Go.

We do not push OBD for theft protection, because being easy to remove undermines the whole point. Whichever you choose, the real value is the monitored service behind it: our Secure Operating Center watches 24/7 and contacts you, so you are never the one who has to spot the theft first.
