Carjacking vs theft: what a tracker actually does in each case

June 3, 2026

Carjacking and car theft get lumped together, but they are different crimes with different risks, and the right response to each is different too. If you are choosing a tracker, it helps to know which problem you are actually protecting against.

What separates the two

Ordinary theft happens when the car is empty. Someone breaks in, defeats the security, and drives off, usually while you are asleep or at work. You find out after the fact. The thief has time and quiet on their side.

Carjacking is taken by force while the car is occupied. The keys are in the ignition or in your pocket, the engine may be running, and there is a person threatening you to get out. It is fast, it is frightening, and it happens in seconds. The thief does not need to defeat any security because you hand over a running car under threat.

That difference matters because it changes what a tracker can safely do.

Why immobilization is the wrong tool for a carjacking

It is tempting to think a tracker that can stop the engine would end a carjacking on the spot. It would not, and you would not want it to.

Stopping a moving car with someone at the wheel is dangerous. It could cause a crash, and in a carjacking there may still be a victim nearby or a struggle in progress. No responsible tracking service will kill the engine of an occupied car in traffic. Safety comes first, every time.

So in a carjacking, the value of a tracker is not prevention. It is speed. The car is already gone with a driver in it, and what you need is fast, accurate tracking and a recovery process that is already moving before you have caught your breath.

Where monitored tracking earns its keep

This is where being monitored changes everything. With a self-monitored app, you are the one who has to notice the car is gone, open the app, and start calling people. After a carjacking you are shaken and that is a lot to ask.

With ScorpionTrack Standard the car is watched 24/7 from our Secure Operating Center. When it moves in a way that does not add up, we contact you. You do not have to notify us. That is the whole point: after something as jarring as a carjacking, the recovery is already underway while you are still processing what happened. We work with police to bring the vehicle back.

Where prevention does belong: ordinary theft

For theft of an empty car, the math flips. Here prevention is not only safe, it is the best outcome. A car that never moves is a car you never have to chase.

ScorpionTrack Secure adds two Automatic Driver Recognition tags. The car expects an authorized tag to be present. Move it without one and the theft is flagged instantly, which is exactly what a relay or tow attempt looks like. ScorpionTrack Elite goes further with automatic and remote immobilization, so the engine will not start for a thief in the first place. For an empty car, prevention beats recovery every time.

Match the tier to the real risk

If your worry is your car vanishing overnight, lean toward prevention with Secure or Elite. If your worry is being targeted while driving in a higher-risk area, the honest answer is that fast monitored recovery is your protection, because stopping an occupied car is not safe.

Either way, being monitored is what turns a location dot into a recovered vehicle. Read what to do if your car is stolen for the steps that follow, and how remote immobilization works for where stopping the car does and does not apply.
