Most people picture a car tracker as something you clip on and forget. The reality is more interesting, and the way a tracker is installed has a big effect on how well it protects your vehicle. Here is how it actually works.
Two very different approaches
There are two broad ways to get a tracker into a car.
The first is the plug-in route. A small device pushes into the OBD port, usually under the dash near the steering column. It powers up in seconds and needs no tools. That sounds great until you realize the OBD port is the first place a thief looks. The unit sits in plain sight, and it can be unplugged in the time it takes to open the door.
The second is professional hardwiring. A trained installer wires the tracker directly into the vehicle’s electrical system and tucks it away out of sight. There is no external clue that the car is protected, and no obvious plug to pull. This is how every hardwired ScorpionTrack tier is fitted, and it is a big part of why they work. If you want the full comparison, read hardwired vs battery vs OBD trackers.
What professional installation involves
A ScorpionTrack install is carried out by a trained installer, either at your location or theirs. Here is roughly what happens.
The installer finds a discreet, concealed spot for the main unit. They connect it to a permanent power source so it runs off the vehicle rather than a battery you have to think about. They route the wiring cleanly so nothing is exposed or rattling. On tiers that use Automatic Driver Recognition, they pair the driver tags so the system knows the difference between you and a thief. Then they test everything and confirm the vehicle is live on our monitoring platform.
It is careful work, not a rushed clip-on job, and that care is what makes the tracker hard to find and hard to defeat.
The battery-powered exception
Not every vehicle has permanent power to wire into, and not every situation calls for a full hardwired install. That is where Scorpion Go comes in. It is battery-powered, so it suits vehicles without permanent power, along with trailers, classic cars kept off the grid, and anything you want tracked without touching the wiring. Battery life varies by device and how often the vehicle moves, so we set it up to match how you use it.
Which tier gets installed
The install itself scales with the level of protection you choose.
Standard is hardwired and gives you monitored recovery. Secure adds two Automatic Driver Recognition tags, which is the answer to keyless and relay theft, where the car is driven off without your keys. Elite does everything Secure does and adds remote immobilization, so the vehicle can be stopped after a confirmed theft. You can see all of them on the products page. Every tier is insurance approved.
Why the install matters so much
Here is the pillar that runs through everything we do. Concealment and hardwiring make the tracker hard to find, but the real protection is what happens next. Your vehicle is monitored 24/7 from our Secure Operating Center. When it moves without authorization, we contact you. You do not have to notice something is wrong and call us first. That is the whole point: prevention and fast response beat chasing a car after it is long gone.
A tracker is only as good as the way it is fitted and the team watching it. Get both right and you have real protection, not a gadget in a glovebox. To understand the monitoring side, read monitored vs self-monitored trackers.
