Automatic driver recognition explained

July 3, 2026

Most trackers can tell you where your car is. Very few can tell you whether the person driving it is supposed to be there. That gap is exactly what thieves exploit. Automatic Driver Recognition (ADR) closes it.

What driver recognition actually does

ADR uses small wireless driver tags. You keep one on your keyring or in your pocket. When the car starts and moves, the system checks for a valid tag inside the vehicle.

If your tag is present, the system knows an authorized driver is behind the wheel. Everything is normal. No alert, no fuss.

If the car moves and no tag is present, that is a problem. Someone is driving your vehicle without the thing that proves they should be. The system treats that as a theft in progress and fires an instant monitored alert.

That is the whole idea in one sentence: the tag proves it is you, and the absence of the tag proves it is not.

Why this matters against modern theft

Think about how cars actually get stolen now. Relay attacks copy your key fob signal from outside your house and trick the car into unlocking and starting. Keyless theft, key cloning, even a flatbed tow, none of them involve your genuine tag.

A basic tracker sees a car that is unlocked, started, and driving away. As far as it knows, that is a normal trip. ADR sees a car moving with no authorized driver present and calls it what it is: a theft.

This is the difference between a tracker that reacts after your car is long gone and one that catches the theft the moment it starts.

We contact you, you do not chase us

Here is the part people get backward. With ADR on a monitored plan, you do not have to notice your car is missing and phone it in. When a vehicle moves without a valid tag, the alert goes to our Secure Operating Center. We watch it, and we contact you.

So the sequence is not “you wake up, find an empty driveway, and start making calls.” It is “your phone rings because we already know something is wrong.” That head start is often the difference between a recovered car and a written-off one.

Which ScorpionTrack plans include it

Automatic Driver Recognition comes as standard on both Secure and Elite, and each of those ships with two driver tags. Two tags covers a household with more than one regular driver, so a partner or family member driving the car never triggers a false alarm.

If you want the strongest version of prevention, Elite pairs driver recognition with remote immobilization, so a car moving without a tag can actually be stopped, not just tracked. Prevention beats recovery every time. You can compare all the plans here.

A quick honesty note

Driver recognition is not a magic force field. A determined thief with your actual tag in the car is a different scenario, which is why you keep tags separate from anywhere obvious. What ADR is brilliant at is catching the theft methods that dominate today: relay, keyless, cloning, and tow-away jobs where the criminal never has your tag at all.
