What is a GPS vehicle tracker and how does it work?

July 4, 2026

A GPS vehicle tracker is a small device fitted to your car, truck, motorcycle or trailer that reports where the vehicle is and tells you when something is wrong. If it is ever stolen, the tracker is how you and, with the right system, a monitoring team find it fast. Here is how the technology works, without the jargon.

GPS finds the vehicle, cellular sends the news

Two separate networks do the work. GPS satellites let the device calculate its own position anywhere on Earth, usually within a few yards. That position is just a set of coordinates sitting inside the unit until something carries it back to you. That is the second network: a cellular SIM, much like the one in your phone, sends the location over the mobile network to a secure server.

So the tracker listens to satellites to know where it is, then uses cellular data to report it. Lose one and the system is blind, which is why build quality and a reliable SIM matter more than the sticker price.

Hardwired vs battery-powered

There are two ways to power a tracker, and the choice depends on the vehicle.

A hardwired tracker is wired into the vehicle’s electrical system by a professional installer. Because it has constant power, it can report live location, keep a full journey history and stay alert around the clock. This is the setup for anything with permanent power: cars, vans, trucks, motorcycles in regular use. ScorpionTrack Standard, Secure and Elite are all hardwired.

A battery-powered tracker has its own internal cell and no wiring, so it can go on things that sit without power. Scorpion Go runs up to three years on its battery, is IP68 weatherproof, and suits trailers, caravans, classic cars and seasonal vehicles. To make the battery last it sends trip-based updates rather than a constant live feed, which is the sensible trade for something parked in a barn all winter.

The app is the easy part

Most trackers pair with a phone app where you can see the vehicle on a map, review recent journeys, set a safe zone and get alerts if the car moves when it should not. Scorpion Go adds simple arm and disarm from the app, so it knows when you have parked up and left it.

The app is genuinely useful. It is also where a lot of cheaper trackers stop, and that is the part worth understanding before you buy.

Self-monitored vs professionally monitored

A self-monitored tracker pings your phone and leaves the rest to you. If the alert lands while you are asleep or in a meeting, nothing happens until you notice, and by then the car can be miles away.

A monitored system works the other way around. Our Secure Operating Center watches for the theft signal 24 hours a day. If your vehicle moves when it should not, the team contacts you to check it is not just you, and if it is a genuine theft they coordinate the recovery with law enforcement. You do not have to spot it first or remember which app to open at 2am. That is the real line between a gadget that notifies you and a service that protects you.
