Keyless entry is convenient, and thieves love convenience too. The good news is that most keyless theft is opportunist, so a few solid habits move you well down the target list. Here are the tips that earn their place, ranked roughly by effort versus payoff.
Silence your key fob at home
Your fob broadcasts a signal all the time, and that signal is what relay thieves steal. Kill it when you are home.
- Keep the fob in a signal-blocking pouch, a Faraday pouch. It is cheap and it works. See what is a Faraday pouch.
- Store keys away from the front door, letterbox, windows and exterior walls. Distance makes the relay harder.
- Pouch the spare key too. A spare in a hallway drawer undoes all your care with the main one.
- Check if your fob has a motion-sleep mode that switches it off when still. Many newer keys do.
Add a visible physical deterrent
Electronics get most of the attention, but old-school locks still work because thieves want fast and quiet.
- A steering wheel lock is slow to defeat and obvious from the street. It moves thieves along to an easier car.
- Use a wheel clamp or hitch lock on trailers, caravans and anything left parked and unpowered.
- Park defensively: nose to the garage, boxed in by another vehicle where you can.
Protect the diagnostic port
Some thieves ignore your fob entirely and program a new key through the car’s diagnostic port. A lockable port cover or a professionally fitted block makes that far slower and less appealing. Ask a proper installer, not a plug-in gadget.
Tighten the everyday habits
- Always check the car actually locked. A jammer can swallow the lock signal so you walk away from an open car. A quick tug on the handle costs nothing.
- Never leave the fob in the car, not even in the glovebox overnight.
- Do not leave anything on show. A clean interior is a less tempting target.
- Be careful posting new-car photos with plates and locations visible.
The habit problem, said plainly
Every tip above works. Every tip above also depends on you doing it right, every single day, forever. One forgotten pouch, one houseguest’s key by the door, one flatbed crew who never touch your electronics, and prevention has nothing left to give. That is not a reason to skip the habits. It is a reason not to rely on them alone.
The safety net that does not depend on you
This is where a monitored tracker earns its place. ScorpionTrack Secure includes two Automatic Driver Recognition tags. The tag proves an authorized driver is present, so if the car moves without one, whether by relay, stolen key or flatbed, it triggers an instant alert. Our Secure Operating Center watches 24/7 and contacts you the moment the vehicle moves. You do not have to notice the empty driveway and report it. We tell you, then work with law enforcement to recover it.
Want to stop the theft rather than track it? ScorpionTrack Elite adds automatic and remote immobilization. The engine will not start without a valid tag present, and a live theft can be halted remotely.
Put it together
Do the cheap things first: pouch the fob, store keys well, add a wheel lock, always check the car locked. Then back your habits with a monitored tracker that catches the theft on the night your guard slips, because prevention beats recovery and a stopped theft beats a chased one.
