Relay theft sounds high-tech. The fix at the car is not, and neither is the gap most people miss.
Here is what is really happening. Your key fob is always broadcasting a short-range signal. Thieves use a relay, or amplifier, to grab that signal from the fob sitting in your hallway and stretch it out to your car on the driveway. The car thinks the key is right beside it, so it unlocks and starts. No broken glass, no forced ignition, no noise. Two people, under a minute, and your car is gone.
Kill the signal at the source
The fob is the weak point, so start there.
- Keep the fob in a signal-blocking pouch, a Faraday pouch, when you are home. It stops the fob talking to anyone. More on that in what is a Faraday pouch.
- Store keys away from the front door, windows and exterior walls. The closer the fob is to the street, the easier the relay.
- A metal tin or the microwave can help in a pinch, but a proper pouch is more reliable and you are less likely to forget it.
- Ask your dealer whether your fob supports a motion-sensor sleep mode that switches it off when it sits still. Many newer keys have it.
Make the car harder to take
Signal blocking handles the electronics. A physical deterrent handles the rest.
- A quality steering wheel lock is ugly and slow to defeat, and thieves prefer fast and quiet. Visible deterrents move them along.
- Park defensively. A car boxed in on the driveway, nose to the garage, is a poor target.
- Use a locking pin or wheel clamp on trailers, caravans and anything left parked and unpowered.
The gap every prevention habit leaves
Here is the honest part. Faraday pouches, key discipline and wheel locks all work. But they all depend on you, every single night, without fail. Forget the pouch once. Have a spare key a houseguest left near the door. Face a crew who tow the car onto a flatbed and bypass the electronics entirely. Prevention has an off switch, and it is human error.
That is the gap a monitored tracker is built to close.
Catch the theft even when prevention fails
ScorpionTrack Secure adds two Automatic Driver Recognition tags. The tag proves an authorized driver is present. So if your car moves without a tag, which is exactly what happens in a relay or keyless theft, it triggers an instant alert. Our Secure Operating Center is watching 24/7, and we contact you the moment it moves. You are not the one who has to notice the empty driveway and report it. We tell you.
If you want to stop the theft rather than follow it, ScorpionTrack Elite adds automatic and remote immobilization. The engine will not start without a valid tag present, and if a theft is already underway our team can immobilize the vehicle remotely. The relay attack that got past your pouch simply does not go anywhere.
The honest bottom line
Do the cheap, simple things first. A pouch, sensible key storage and a wheel lock will deter a lot of opportunists, and they cost almost nothing. But recognize what they cannot do: they cannot recover a car that is already moving, and they cannot cover the night you slip up.
Prevention beats recovery, and the best setup does both. Block the signal at home, and back it with a monitored tracker that catches the theft when a habit fails.
