Flatbed tow-away theft: when the car never even starts

June 18, 2026

Tow-away theft is one of the sneakiest methods out there because it sidesteps almost everything people rely on. The thieves never start your engine, never need your key, and can be gone in under a minute. If you want to protect a car against this, you first have to understand why the usual defenses miss it.

How tow-away theft works

The setup is simple. A crew rolls up with a flatbed truck or a tow dolly, often dressed to look like a legitimate recovery outfit so nobody looks twice. They winch or lift your car onto the bed and drive off. The whole thing can look completely ordinary to a passerby.

Because the car is being carried, not driven, none of the car’s own security ever gets triggered. No key, no ignition, no engine. The immobilizer sits there doing its job perfectly while the car it is protecting rolls away on the back of a truck.

Why an immobilizer alone will not save you

This is the honest limit that a lot of tracker marketing skips. An immobilizer stops the engine from starting. That is genuinely powerful against a thief who wants to drive your car away. It does nothing at all against a thief who never intends to start it.

If your entire protection is “the engine will not start,” a flatbed defeats it completely. The car does not need to run to be stolen. So for this specific threat, immobilization on its own is the wrong tool, and anyone who tells you otherwise is overclaiming.

What actually catches a tow-away

The thing a flatbed cannot avoid is movement. The car is going somewhere it should not, and that is what a monitored tracker detects.

With ScorpionTrack Standard your vehicle is watched 24/7 from our Secure Operating Center. When it moves and it should not be moving, we contact you. It does not matter that the engine never ran. Movement is movement, and unexpected movement is exactly what triggers the alert. You do not have to notice the empty parking spot and raise the alarm yourself. We reach out to you, and recovery starts straight away, working with police.

That is the whole answer to tow-away theft: it is a movement problem, and monitored movement detection is what solves it.

Where ADR adds another layer

ScorpionTrack Secure adds two Automatic Driver Recognition tags. The car expects an authorized tag to be present whenever it moves. Winch it onto a flatbed with no tag anywhere near it and the theft is flagged instantly. A tow crew does not have your tag, so the move looks exactly like what it is: a vehicle leaving without an authorized driver.

Being honest about the limits

Here is the part we will not dress up. No tracker physically stops a flatbed. There is no device you can fit that grabs the car back off the truck. Immobilization does not help either, since the engine was never the point.

What protects you is speed and monitoring. A fast, monitored alert the moment the car moves, backed by a recovery team already working with police, is how tow-away vehicles get found before they are stripped or shipped. The value is not in stopping the tow, it is in catching it in real time and chasing it down.

The bottom line

Tow-away theft beats key security and immobilizers because it never touches either. What it cannot beat is monitored movement detection. A car that reports the instant it moves, watched by a team that contacts you rather than waiting for you to call, is the realistic defense.
