Car theft in Chicago: expressways, carjackings and fast exits

April 3, 2026

Chicago has a theft problem shaped by its geography. A dense grid of neighborhoods, a ring of expressways that feed straight out of the city, and a carjacking pattern that spiked hard in recent years and never fully settled back. If you park on the street here, which most people do, your car spends its life exposed on exactly the streets thieves work.

Where it concentrates

Carjacking is the story that sets Chicago apart. Local reporting and Chicago Police data documented a sharp surge in carjackings starting around 2020, with the West and South sides carrying the heaviest load. Districts around Austin, Garfield Park, Englewood, and the South Shore corridors have seen some of the highest counts, though downtown and the near North side are not immune, and a lot of incidents happen at gas stations, alleys, and while drivers idle at lights.

The expressways are the other half of it. The Eisenhower, the Dan Ryan, the Kennedy, and the Stevenson all cut through the city and connect to the wider interstate network within minutes. A carjacked vehicle can be on a highway and out of the neighborhood before the driver has even caught their breath. That speed is the whole point for the people doing it.

The patterns that show up here

Carjacking means the theft happens with the keys in hand, so keyless defenses alone are not the whole answer here, though relay theft of parked cars is rising in the outer neighborhoods and suburbs too. What Chicago drivers face is a mix: a violent grab at a light on one block, a quiet relay attack in a Lincoln Park driveway on another.

Popular targets skew toward what resells and strips well. Full-size SUVs and pickups, Hondas and Hyundais, and higher-end vehicles caught in the near North and downtown garages. Cook County’s chop shops and the easy interstate access give a stolen car plenty of places to disappear into fast.

Winter changes behavior too. Cold mornings mean warmed-up cars left running and unattended on the street, and Chicago sees a reliable seasonal bump in thefts of vehicles left idling in the driveway.

Why recovery gets harder here

A carjacked or stolen car in Chicago has a head start measured in minutes. The expressway network means it can cover real distance before it is reported, and a crowded, sprawling metro gives it a thousand places to sit. Recovery happens, but banking on it in a city built for fast exits is a weak plan.

That is why stopping the theft beats chasing it. ScorpionTrack Elite adds automatic and remote immobilization, so the engine will not restart without a valid driver tag present. If a vehicle is taken, the theft in progress can be halted before it reaches the Ryan or the Ike. Prevention beats recovery, and in Chicago that gap is measured in city blocks.

Monitored, not left to you

Our Secure Operating Center watches your vehicle around the clock. If it moves when it should not, our team contacts you to confirm before coordinating recovery with law enforcement. You are not the one who has to notice the car is gone and start making calls, which matters most in the chaos right after a carjacking when the last thing you can do calmly is file a report.

For an everyday car parked on the street, Standard gives you hardwired, monitored recovery. With relay theft climbing in the neighborhoods and suburbs, ScorpionTrack Secure adds two Automatic Driver Recognition tags built for keyless and relay attacks.

Choosing your level

If you park on a Chicago street, immobilization earns its place fast. It helps to understand what to do the moment your car is stolen and how carjacking differs from ordinary theft.
