Car theft in Oregon: the Portland surge

March 19, 2026

Oregon is a case study in how fast a theft problem can grow. A state with a mild, easygoing reputation saw its vehicle theft rate climb sharply in recent years, with the Portland metro leading the way. If your picture of Oregon car crime is a few years out of date, it is worth updating, because the numbers moved a long way in a short time.

Where it concentrates

Portland and the surrounding metro drive the statewide figures. NICB reporting has flagged the Portland area among the higher-theft markets in the country in recent years, a marked change from where it sat a decade ago. The concentration of population, the freeway network around Interstate 5 and Interstate 84, and the river crossings toward Washington all feed the pattern.

Salem, Eugene, and the Medford area add to the total further south, and the I-5 corridor running the length of the state gives a stolen car a straight shot in either direction.

The patterns that show up here

The surge itself is the story. Oregon’s rate rose faster than most of the country, and the sharpness of the climb tells you the problem is opportunistic and growing rather than settled. Catalytic converter theft has also been a persistent Oregon complaint, with hybrids and trucks stripped in parking lots and driveways.

Full-size pickups and popular SUVs are targeted for resale, older Honda and Toyota models remain steady targets, and the Hyundai and Kia theft trend hit Oregon hard during the surge. The state’s damp, dark winters also give thieves long hours of cover to work in.

Why recovery gets harder here

The I-5 corridor cuts against recovery. A stolen vehicle can head north toward Washington or south toward California within an hour, crossing jurisdictions and stretching any single department’s reach. When theft volume rises as fast as Oregon’s did, police resources do not scale up at the same speed, and any one stolen car competes for attention. Relying on recovery alone during a surge is a weak plan.

So prevention beats recovery here. ScorpionTrack Elite adds automatic and remote immobilization, so the engine will not start without a valid driver tag present, and a theft in progress can be halted before the car reaches the interstate and the state line. Stopping it beats chasing it up or down I-5.

Monitored, not left to you

Our Secure Operating Center watches your vehicle around the clock. If it moves when it should not, our team contacts you to confirm before coordinating recovery with law enforcement. You do not have to notice the car is gone and file the report yourself, which is the weak point in every self-monitored setup, and a real risk on a dark Portland morning when a vehicle is taken before you are even awake.

Given the keyless attacks reaching the state, ScorpionTrack Secure adds two Automatic Driver Recognition tags built for keyless and relay theft. For an everyday driver, Standard gives you hardwired, monitored recovery.

Choosing your level

If you park in the Portland metro, immobilization is the level worth having. It helps to see how states compare on theft and to know what to do the moment your car is taken. Every tier is insurance approved and includes the monitoring behind it. See them together on the products page.
