Is an AirTag enough to protect your car from theft? A safer alternative.

August 2, 2026

Hiding an AirTag in your car feels like a smart, cheap bit of protection, and it is easy to see why. The problem is that an AirTag was built to find your keys, not to get a stolen car back, and used against a thief it can quietly work against you. Here is what it really does, and what actually protects the vehicle.

What an AirTag is and what it does well

An Apple AirTag, and the Tile that works the same way, is a Bluetooth item-finder. It has no GPS and no cellular connection of its own. Instead it borrows location from other people’s phones: when an iPhone passes near your AirTag, it quietly reports where it saw it. For finding a bag, a bike or keys down the back of a sofa, that crowd-sourced network is genuinely clever, and for a few dollars it is hard to fault.

That is the honest case for it. As a finder of everyday things, an AirTag is very good, and if that is all you want from it, keep using it.

Why it falls short against car theft

Car theft is where the design turns against you, in two specific ways.

First, the location is only as good as the crowd. Because there is no cellular link, an AirTag cannot report on its own. It only updates when someone else’s iPhone happens to pass close enough to hear it. Down a quiet lane, in a container, or in an underground unit, that can mean no update for a long time. You get an occasional pin on a map, not a live track, and you get it entirely on your own.

Second, and this is the one that catches people out, an AirTag can warn the thief. To protect against stalking, Apple alerts an iPhone user when an unknown AirTag is travelling with them, with a message like “AirTag Found Moving With You”. A car thief carrying an iPhone gets that same alert, which tells them there is a tracker in the vehicle and invites them to find it and throw it out. The safety feature that protects people is exactly the feature that tips off the person stealing your car.

On top of that, there is no monitoring, no recovery service and no way to stop the car. If it is taken at 3am, an AirTag leaves you alone with an intermittent map and no one to call, while the person driving your car may already know it is there. The same gaps apply on two wheels, which is why a dedicated motorcycle GPS tracker beats an AirTag zip-tied under the seat.

Why ScorpionTrack is the safer choice

A monitored tracking system is a different kind of thing entirely, built for the moment a vehicle is actually stolen.

We contact you. Our Secure Operating Center watches for the theft signal around the clock. If your vehicle moves when it should not, our team calls you to check it is not simply you, and if it is a genuine theft they coordinate recovery with law enforcement. You are not squinting at a map hoping a stranger’s phone walks past.

We stay hidden and connected. ScorpionTrack hardware is hardwired and professionally concealed, with its own cellular link, so it reports continuously rather than waiting for a passing phone. There is no anti-stalking alert to warn the thief that it is there.

We can stop the theft. ScorpionTrack Elite adds automatic and remote immobilization, so the engine will not start without a valid driver tag present, and a theft in progress can be stopped remotely. An AirTag cannot influence the car at all.

We recognize the driver. ScorpionTrack Secure and Elite include two Automatic Driver Recognition tags, so if the car moves without an approved driver, as in a relay or keyless theft, the alert is instant.

It is insurance approved and British engineered, protecting vehicles since 1973.
